Wigan is now on coronavirus ‘red alert’ after the infection rate rose above the threshold to be placed on the government watchlist.
The borough’s rate now stands at 58.73 cases per 100,000 people, according to the latest statistics announced by Public Health England today.
It means Wigan has joined seven other areas in Greater Manchester with an infection rate above 50.
Up until now, this has been the threshold for the government to consider local intervention to bring infection rates down.
