Jurgen Klopp sends heartwarming video to Adebayo Akinfenwa following Wycombe promotion – Mirror Online
The veteran striker pleaded for the Liverpool manager to get in touch following their win at Wembley and Klopp responded in style
Jurgen Klopp has responded to Adebayo Akinfenwa’s request to “hit me up” by sending the striker a congratulatory video message following Wycombe’s promotion to the Championship.
The Chairboys beat Oxford United 2-1 in the League One playoff final on Monday night and will play in the second tier of English football for the first time in their history next season.
The larger-than-life Akinfenwa, who is a big Liverpool fan, was released by Wimbledon four years ago and famously asked any watching managers to “hit me up on the WhatsApp and get me a job.”
The 38-year-old was in much better spirits following the win against Oxford, and told Sky Sports at full-time: “Let me tell you something, the only person that can hit me up on WhatsApp this time is Klopp, so we can celebrate together. You get me? Oi!”
Adebayo Akinfenwa was clearly delighted to hear from Jurgen Klopp
He was still wearing his full kit while watching the video
Akinfenwa then shared a video to his Twitter account in the early hours of Tuesday morning, in which he is seen still dressed in his full kit standing in a street.
The clearly delighted player shows to the camera a video message Klopp had sent, in which the Liverpool manager says: “Hello big man. Congratulations. I watched the game but I didn’t see the post-match interviews but Hendo and the boys told me to get in contact with you on WhatsApp so here we go.
“Congratulations! I’m pretty sure your whole life you wanted to be at least a Championship player and now, finally, you are there. Well done. Great, great victory.
“Even in these strange times I hope you celebrate appropriately.”
Akinfenwa is known to be a big Liverpool fan
Akinfenwa then yells in delight: “Come on! Klopp you’re a legend! We did it, I told you it would be up on WhatsApp, we celebrate together. You’ll never walk alone! Beast mode!”
He also shared a caption along with the video which read: “Are u crazyyyyyyy the man, the myth, the legend sent me a Watsapp. Today cant get any better. Thank you Klopp #YNWA#Beast20#BeastMode we did it #champHereWeCome ”
Akinfenwa is considered one of the biggest personalities in English football, and recently received a fine from his club after he turned up to training with a Liverpool shirt on the day after the Reds clinched the Premier League title.

But he may now receive some money back after he told the Liverpool Echo ahead of the game against Oxford : “To be fair the gaffer told me he would halve my fine if we got promoted but Id be so happy if we went up, Ill still gladly pay the full amount. It would be money well spent.
Its crazy because in my mind Ive visualised Liverpool doing what theyve done and winning the Premier League and then on a personal note, us getting promoted to the Championship.
It would be a very good middle to 2020 for me because this year has been kind of different.
Xherdan Shaqiri absence hints at next Liverpool transfer move – Liverpool Echo
Xherdan Shaqiri hasn’t featured since returning from injury and the writing looks to be on the wall for his Liverpool career
Jurgen Klopp was in full flow, describing what happens next for Adam Lallana at Liverpool as his contract enter its final days.
“The future is his future,” said the Reds boss. “And if we need his help on the pitch we can get it.
“He is there. He trains 100 per cent but as long as we dont need it, he will just train.”
With Lallana in line to be one of the most in-demand free agents this summer, it is understandable that an agreement has been reached between club and player.
With Liverpool well stocked in the midfield department and already crowned as Premier League champions, selecting Lallana would only put him at risk of an injury that could scupper a summer move.
At the age of 31, the former Southampton captain is preparing for a new life away from Merseyside this summer as he aims to squeeze the final years out of his career at the top level.
But listening to the comments from Klopp, it is difficult to escape the feeling that such an agreement is in place elsewhere in the Liverpool squad too.
Xherdan Shaqiri was once more an unused substitute on Saturday as the champions dropped points for the first time at Anfield for 18 months.
A 1-1 draw at Burnley was a frustrating afternoon at the office for Klopp and his players as the Premier League winners saw a 24-game winning sequence ended against Sean Dyche’s limited yet spirited side.
Shaqiri was left on the bench and made to watch on as the Reds struggled to break down a durable Burnley in the second half at Anfield.
Even allowing for the fact that five substitutes could be made, Klopp left the mercurial talents of the Switzerland star in reserve. It was the same story six days earlier as Liverpool toiled in their efforts to find the breakthrough against a struggling Aston Villa.
Liverpool are Premier League champions
It took until the 71st for Villa’s goal to be breached as Shaqiri, who was back on a Liverpool bench for the first time since January, looked on.
It could be argued that Klopp is simply utilising other areas of his squad, with both Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino earning starts since the resumption of football last month.
But could it be true that Shaqiri is being left unused to preserve his fitness after a lengthy lay-off?
Shaqiri, of course, was attracting interest from both Sevilla and Roma back in January although Liverpool steered clear of entering into negotiations with Klopp feeling he needed everyone on board as a special season began to shape itself.
Anfield sources privately made it known they would listen to offers this summer, however, and considering the 28-year-old has played just a couple of minutes of football since the turn of the year, it is unlikely that stance has changed since.
A versatile attacker with ample quality is perhaps the ideal profile for Klopp in this summer’s transfer market and there would be a school of thought to suggest that Shaqiri would be perfect if he were on the market elsewhere.
Must-read Liverpool FC news
But given he’s made just one start in the Premier League this term, Klopp will be justified in thinking he can get by without the former Stoke star’s services.
With Liverpool, like almost every other club, adjusting to the revenue hit taken by the suspension of football over the last three months, Shaqiri may yet prove to be a valuable chip in market dealings.
If the Reds are able to command anything near the £25m valuation they placed on him at the start of the year, that should, in theory, boost the coffers for a club that is aiming to dust their title-winning squad with more depth and quality.
The break in play had offered Shaqiri a chance to get fit and re-establish himself at Anfield, but a half-dozen games into the restart and the player is still awaiting a return to the pitch.
Two years and a day since he first signed, the writing, now more than ever, is surely on the wall for his Liverpool career.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singles out ‘absolutely top class’ Man Utd star after Southampton draw – Metro.co.uk
What a campaign he’s having.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Anthony Martials performance against Southampton as absolutely top class following his sides 2-2 draw.
The Red Devils failed to take full advantage of defeats from rivals Leicester City and Chelsea by conceding a 96th minute equaliser to the Saints at Old Trafford.
Stuart Armstrong put the visitors ahead but goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford looked to have given United the three points they needed to claim a place in the top four for the first time since September.
That wasnt to be but it was another impressive performance from Martial, who assisted Rashford for the opener before claiming a goal of his own.
That was the Frenchmans 21st goal of the campaign and Solskjaer couldnt hide his delight about his display afterwards.

Asked if he was annoyed about his sides finishing like he was after Thursdays 3-0 win against Aston Villa, Solskjaer said: Yeah if you get the two-goal chusion thats a different ball game but two fantastic goals.
Anthony I thought he was excellent today, absolutely top class.
Especially the second goal thats how we want to play football. Fast, quick, through the pitch and a very good finish.
Though United failed to move into the top four, the draw extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches.
Solskjaer refused to get downbeat after the dropped points and says United have their destiny in their own hands going into the final three league games.
United know three wins would mean they claim a Champions League spot and they face Crystal Palace on Thursday at Selhurst Park before a home game against West Ham.
It looks likely that the top four race will go down to the final day, where United take on Leicester City and Chelsea take on Wolves.
